We’re just a few hours away from the first pick-up, and the start of another great season of the Bay Ridge CSA! Here’s what you can expect to receive in a bumper first share of the season
A note on the garlic: Usually Hearty Roots plan to offer green garlic during the first share, and garlic scapes a few weeks later. This year, everything is ripening early, so the scapes are ready now! So, they are offering both. Both will store very well in the fridge. Here’s the difference between the two:
- Green garlic is the full, immature garlic plant, plucked from the ground just before it makes a large bulb. The lower half of the plant can be used like traditional garlic, but it has a little more bits since it’s not cured like mature garlic.
- Garlic scapes are the flower shoot of the plant. The farm pick them off to encourage the plant to send more energy to its bulb. Scapes are milder than green garlic, and go great minced with eggs, or to add some mild garlic flavor to other cooked dishes. This Sunday, June 10th, Hearty Roots will be planting leek seedlings on the farm. They encourage members to come out, take a tour of the farm (4pm), and lend a hand if you choose. They’ll be out there from 2pm – 6pm, so come for as much or as little time as you wish. You can either get your hands dirty planting, or just enjoy the farm and have a picnic. We all hope to see you there! 227 Pitcher Lane, town of Red Hook, NY.
